The first human to walk on the moon, July 20, 1969, U.S. Astronaut Neil Armstrong has died of complications of heart bypass surgery. He was 82.
On August 13, 1969, he and fellow Apollo 11 Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the lunar surface and Michael Collins were given a ticker-tape parade in New York City seen by an estimated crowd of some four million people.
The Astronauts, waving from the bottom, Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin, received the Keys to the City, on the steps of City Hall, from Mayor John Lindsay, waving right.
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” Armstrong said upon putting his foot on the moon.
The fact of putting a man on the moon was seen as a major victory in the cold war and is cited as one of, if not the greatest scientific achievement in the history of man.
Armstrong has been seen as a hero of humanity. His memory will not fade quickly. Hopefully his step will not be the last great leap for mankind.
